These unfinished wood gingerbread people don’t look like much sitting on the shelf, but you’ll love them once you bring them home and decorate them. I kept them simple with classic red and green embellishments, but they can be as colorful as you’d like. I think they’d be perfect for a craft night. Set out a table full of paint, buttons, pom poms, glitter, ribbon, and whatever else you can find to decorate these cuties!

You’ll need:

  • wood gingerbread cut outs ($3 each from Bullseye’s Playground)
  • brown and white acrylic paint
  • paintbrushes
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • super glue
  • buttons

These are the gingerbread people I picked up from Bullseye’s Playground. They’re about a foot tall.

Cover the gingerbread cut outs with brown paint. Use a brush that can get in the grooves easily. Using spray paint would be a lot quicker, but not nearly as fun!

Once they’re dry, use white paint for the frosting outline. A small detailing brush is really useful here. Create an outline around the eyes and mouth too.

Making the bows is very easy. Begin by cutting a piece of ribbon and gluing the ends to form a circle.

Add a drop of glue to join the center.

Cut a smaller piece of ribbon and wrap it around the center of the first one. Glue it together in the back.

Glue the buttons to the button holes in the wood. I only placed two buttons on the gingerbread man since his bow will cover the top hole.

Glue the bow to the wood.

Do the same for the gingerbread woman, except use all three buttons and put the bow on the side of her head.

These two are crazy cute! I’m not sure where I’m going to put them yet, but I think they’d look nice outside. By adding a bit of rope or wire I can hang them up. I could even add a wooden stake to the back and put them out on the lawn. I do suggest spraying them with a wood sealer to keep them looking great.
