DIY Halloween Terrarium

Spooky season is finally here! Halloween is one of my very favorite holidays to decorate for. I wanted to add something unusual this year, so I created a Venus fly trap terrarium. If you want to add this ghoulish terrarium to your decor, make a quick Target run for supplies then follow my tutorial below. Let’s go!

You’ll need:

  • ghoulish garden blood succulent
  • mini posable skeleton Halloween decorative prop
  • lantern
  • decorative vase filler or aquarium gravel
  • heavy duty scissors
  • cardboard
  • hot glue gun

Pull the two plant pieces from the foam in the pumpkin.

Remove the bone and replace it with a piece from the skeleton. All you’ll need is some hot glue to attach the skull to the plant.

Cut out a piece of cardboard so that it fits in the base of the lantern. Poke two holes in it for the plants to go. Bend the bottom of each plant as shown.

Pull the bottom of each plant piece through a hole then secure it to the cardboard with a generous amount of hot glue.

Place it inside the lantern.

Pour enough rock filler to cover the bottom of the lantern.

Cut the skeleton to separate some of the bones. Be careful because some pieces have wire running through them.

Arrange some of the bones at the bottom of the terrarium. I ended up adding a little more rock filler at this point.

I can’t get over how amazing this terrarium looks! The Venus fly trap is so well made. The tongues and teeth make it appear as if the Venus fly trap is seconds away from devouring its next victim.

How do you like to decorate for Halloween? Is your Halloween style more sweet than spooky?
