DIY Felt Applique Zipper Pouch

These felt zipper pouches would make a terrific gift for anyone on your list. Simply personalize them and fill them with a few goodies. All you need is a little bit of time and a few supplies for this one of a kind gift people will adore.

You’ll need:

  • zipper pouch ($3 from Target’s Dollar Spot)
  • felt sheets
  • embroidery thread
  • embroidery needle
  • scissors
  • letter or design to trace
  • fine tip permanent marker

I chose to applique a single letter monogram, but a simple shape or design would work just as well. You’ll want to draw it out on a piece of paper first or print it off the computer to trace. I printed the letter M on a piece of paper, cut it out, and then traced it onto the felt with a marker. Make sure to trace it from the back side of your design so the marker won’t show on the finished felt design.

Cut the felt design out.

To applique the letter to the zipper pouch we’re going to use a blanket stitch. Cut a few feet of embroidery thread and thread it onto the needle. Tie a knot at the other end. I found it easier to start upside down because of the zipper on the pouch. Pull the needle from the inside of the pouch near the edge of the letter.

Slightly above where the needle comes out, thread it back down through both layers.

Leave a small loop instead of pulling it all the way through yet.

Pull the needle up next to the same hole you created the first time, and thread it through the loop.

Pull it through. Your needle should be on the outside of your pouch at this point and the stitch should look like this.

Put the needle in on the right side of the top of the stitch you created.

Pull it most of the way through, leaving a small loop again.

Bring the needle up and pull it through that loop.

Continue this process until you’ve gone all the way around. Finish it by securing it with a knot or two on the inside of the pouch.

I couldn’t help but use red felt to go with the zipper pull that was already on the pouch. The contrast the chunky black embroidery thread adds is fun too.

Don’t worry if yours isn’t perfect. Mine definitely isn’t! It is that little touch of handmade that truly counts.
