I love using a variety of trees to decorate my home for Christmas. Bottle brush trees, ceramic trees, mini faux pine trees…I can never have enough! These trees are made with a poster board cone and covered in dyed macrame cord. You can make them as big or small as you’d like so they’re perfect for any size space.
You’ll need:
- 10pk 28″ x 22″ up & up poster board white
- 3mm macrame cord
- acrylic paint
- water
- container
- stick for stirring dye
- scissors
- pencil or marker
- tape
- hot glue gun with glue
- plastic bag or sheet
- gloves
You could easily buy whatever rope or twine you like that is already colored, but doing it yourself is half the fun! The macrame cord I’m using is made from natural cotton so it soaks up the color effortlessly. Mix some acrylic paint with water until you get a color you like.
Place the cord in the dye and let it soak for at least 15 minutes.
Using gloves, ring out as much liquid as you can from the cord. Lay it on a plastic covered surface to dry. This can take anywhere from a few hours to overnight.
Since I wanted different shades of green I just reused the water and added more acrylic paint to change the color.
To create the cone, you’ll want to use a simple string compass to make a quarter circle on the poster board.
Cut it out and roll it into a cone shape. Place tape on the inside and outside of the seam to keep its shape. I like using this pack of poster board from Target because it is thinner than typical poster board. It is perfect for this project and gives you plenty of sheets to work with.
When the cord is dry you can attach it to the cone. Begin at the bottom of the cone by hot gluing the end of the cord down.
Give it a stable base by using hot glue all the way around to attach the cord.
Keep going all the way around with the cord and the glue. When you reach the top, cut the cord and use the hot glue to flatten it down neatly.

Gluing the cord down gets easier and faster with each tree you make. I definitely burned my fingertips a few times, but it was totally worth it.

I barely made a dent in the spool of macrame cord. You could make a whole forest full of these trees between the pack of poster board and single spool of macrame cord. I love the shades of green but might have to branch out to other colors. What kind of color palette would you use for your trees?
