I’m excited to show you how to easily make paper pinwheels with an unlikely Target Dollar Spot find, paper straws! Not only do you get a bunch of them for only a dollar, they’re also really cute! With the right paper they’ll make fantastic decorations for the Fourth of July.
You’ll need:
- paper straws ($1 from Target’s Dollar Spot)
- colorful paper
- paper fasteners
- hole punch
- scissors
- ruler
- pencil
Cut the paper into squares if it isn’t already. I used 4×4 inch squares, but larger squares work well too. Find the middle of your square and mark it with a pencil. My marks are thick so they’ll be easier to show you, but you’ll want to mark yours lightly. Make another mark about half an inch away from the center of the square going out to each corner.
Use scissors to cut from each corner to the marks half an inch away from the center of the square. Use a whole punch to put a hole on each side as shown.
Poke a hole in the middle of the square (where the lines meet to form an X) that is big enough for the back of the paper fasteners to fit through.
Flatten the top of a paper straw and punch a hole in it.
Assemble the paper pinwheel by putting a paper fastener through the four corner holes of the paper, then the center hole of the paper, and finally through the hole in the paper straw. Open up the paper fastener in the back to secure it.
If you want to make them for another occasion use different colors and patterns of paper to fit whatever theme you need. I recommend using paper that is printed on both sides for pinwheels that really stand out. Have fun!
